Consultation

Please allow up to 60 minutes for your first visit.

Case History: On your first consultation a detailed case history will be taken. This helps build up a picture of the symptom patterns and gives clues as to why the body is not functioning normally. I will also ask about your general health and your medical history.

Examination: Following the case history, an examination will be performed. I will observe posture and how freely the body moves and skilled palpation is used to identify areas of weakness, excessive strain or restriction. Checks will be made for signs of serious conditions which are not suitable for osteopathic treatment.

In order for me to properly assess you, some outer clothing is preferably removed. Please don’t worry about this – it is important that you feel comfortable and I can adapt to suit you. You may prefer to wear shorts or comfortable sports wear and blankets are available to cover you during treatment. You are also welcome to bring someone into the treatment room with you if you wish.

Diagnosis: I will give you a clear explanation of what I find and discuss a treatment plan that is suitable for you. I will explain the benefits and any risks of the treatment I am recommending and will give an idea of what the treatment can achieve and the likely number of sessions for a noticeable improvement in how you feel.

Treatment: Osteopathic treatment involves hands-on techniques including soft tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation and re-balancing techniques. Treatment is tailored to each individual and I will always explain what I am doing and ask permission to treat you. If you are worried about any treatment technique, please do tell me, as there is always an alternative method. My aim to be as gentle as possible whilst still being effective.

It is common to experience a small degree of soreness for the 24 hours following treatment (similar to after exercise) - this is completely normal and a good sign as it indicates that changes have occurred in the body tissues.
